CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Climb Every Moun...Wall
Everyone enjoyed dinner. At first, I feared I cooked a lot of food and there would be leftovers, but they proved me wrong. I swear Joy licked her plate.
By the time they finished cleaning and putting everything away, my eyes practically shut on their own. Zach offered his room for the night so I won’t have to sleep in the attic again. I didn’t have the energy to put up a fight; I took it gratefully.
The noise of a door closing wakes me up the next day. The clock on Zach’s side table glows red with the numbers five thirty in the morning. The hushed voices coming from the small window prevents me from going back to sleep. My curiosity spikes. I get out of bed and walk toward it, my eyes widening at the sight, making me fully awake.
Outside in the garden forming two rows stand the rest of the girls and guys, all of them wearing a white shirt, gray pants, and sneakers as if it was a uniform. I make out Archie’s and Kellan’s sleepy faces. Barb pulls her hair back into a ponytail while Lyra crouches, tying the laces of her sneaker.
Standing in front of them is Oliver, eyeing them sternly.
“Let’s get started then.” He gains everybody’s attention with a clap. Without any other explanation, he stretches while the others follow him.
A nagging little voice inside me tells me, “Go with them,” instead of returning to sleep. What better way to bond with them and become part of the family than working out with them?
The family that works out together stays together.
Out of my suitcase I pull out my white t-shirt and the gray pants I wore yesterday morning. I change, ignoring the damage from my run in with Darcy and her bicycle, and finalize my outfit with my gym sneakers. While I tie my hair into a ponytail, I climb to the upper level.
When I reach the garden door, I stop, impressed by the synchrony of their movements. Oliver counts aloud while they change positions.
Silently I walk over, keeping my eyes in front, ignoring the menacing pool lingering a few of feet away. Once I reach them, I locate myself behind Barb.
I focus my attention on the leader who gives me an encouraging smile. Without a word, I follow the routine he sets.
We stretch different parts of our bodies: torso, arms, legs, neck; preparing what seems like a full work out.
We start easy with jumping jacks, mixing it with squats every other ten sets. I follow his instructions not focusing on how many we do, but in doing them right, proving I can be part of this team. He then moves to pushups. Internally, I thank the long hours I’ve spent in the dance studio, my muscles used to long workouts.
“We will now pair up,” Oliver instructs after finishing the set. “Kellan and Barb, Zach and Joy, Archie and Lyra, Abigail, you will be my partner, and Samuel, you’ll partner with Samantha,”
